Education
Since its founding, the Society of Jesus has embraced education as a vital path to transform individuals and societies. The Society of Jesus in the Caribbean, true to this Universal Company tradition, dedicates a good part of its vocation of service to an education that seeks human and academic excellence, aspiring to form students from the Catholic faith, so that they may be conscious, competent, compassionate, and committed. In the Caribbean, our educational apostolate is responding to challenges with vigor and creativity:
- In Miami (USA), Belén Jesuit Preparatory School continues an educational tradition that began in 1854 in Havana, Cuba.
- In Kingston, Jamaica, St. George's College celebrated its 175th anniversary as a Jesuit Catholic Educational Center.
- In the Dominican Republic, Colegio Loyola of Santo Domingo educates children and young people through Ignatian pedagogy. Meanwhile, the Instituto Politécnico Loyola (IPL) in San Cristóbal and the Instituto Tecnológico San Ignacio de Loyola (ITESIL) in Dajabón, strive for excellence in technical education. At the higher education level, the Instituto Especializado de Estudios Superiores Loyola (IEESL) offers bachelor's degrees in various engineering fields, while the Instituto Superior Pedro Francisco Bonó (ISB) provides university studies in Philosophy and Humanities. Fe y Alegría-Dominican Republic works in 65 educational centers nationwide, promoting the right to quality education for the most vulnerable, excluded, and impoverished sectors. Escuelas Radiofónicas Santa María has over 100 centers and 10,000 students in five regions of the national geography.
- In Cuba, the Loyola Centers network supports a large number of children, adolescents, young people, and adults in informal education.
- In Guyana, we have a bilingual education project that strengthens the identity and culture of indigenous peoples.
