This is the second Apostolic Preference of the Society of Jesus. We Jesuits of the Caribbean want to make this preference a reality in all our works, but in a more direct and explicit way, we do this in the Social sector.

The Center P. Juan Montalvo, with its offices in Santo Domingo and Dajabón, carries out activities that reach all of the Dominican Republic. It is a space for reflection, formation, action, and integral human development that works to promote Faith and Justice based on the values of the Society of Jesus and the Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church.

One of the most prominent social issues in the Caribbean and worldwide is migration. The Montalvo Center, along with the Jesuit Refugee Service, supports the migratory processes of hundreds of people from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Gesu Hope Center, in the Gesu Parish in downtown Miami, and the Jesuits committed to the mission in Georgetown, Guyana, do the same.

In parallel, we have the work carried out by the Maternal and Child Pastoral Care in the Dominican Republic since 2004, which benefits approximately 5,000 families in over 300 parishes.

Meanwhile, in Cuba, a preferential option has been made for the most marginalized and discarded members of society. The Jesuits and their collaborators accompany the elderly in vulnerable situations through parishes and the network of Loyola Centers. They do this through soup kitchens and socio-educational spaces that engage with the turbulent Cuban context.
