Parishes
The Jesuits of the Caribbean have 24 parishes under their responsibility. The parish is a place where, in a special way, we are close to the people of God, sharing their joys and sorrows, fears and hopes. In the parish, sacraments are celebrated, the sick are visited, the needy are helped, catechesis is taught, and children, adults, and the elderly are encouraged and accompanied. Faith is lived, taught, and celebrated.
From our missionary tradition, Caribbean Jesuits have traditionally served the majority of parishes in Jamaica and Guyana. Today, we continue with responsibility for one parish in Kingston, Jamaica, and in Guyana, we are in charge of parishes on the eastern bank of the Demerara River, the eastern Atlantic coast, and all communities in Rupununi and the Pakaraimas.
In the Dominican Republic, we serve 6 parishes. Four of them are located in Santo Domingo: the Santísima Trinidad University Parish, Santo Domingo Savio Parish in Los Guandules, San Martín de Porres Parish in Guachupita, and San Ignacio de Loyola Parish in La Ciénaga. The remaining two, San Antonio de Padua Parish in Tamayo and Nuestra Señora del Rosario Parish in Dajabón, are located in the South and North regions, respectively.
In Cuba, the Jesuits have a presence in four of the country's provinces. In Havana, they support the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Ignatius of Loyola Parish in Centro Habana, and the Saint Michael the Archangel Parish in San Miguel del Padrón. In Cienfuegos, they lead the life of four parishes: Our Lady of Montserrat, Our Lady of Lourdes in Buenavista, Christ the King in Tulipán, and Our Lady of Carmen in Caonao. They also have a presence in the Saint Joseph Parish of Camagüey and in the Sagrada Familia and Saint Louis Obispo churches in El Caney.
