On February 19, 2019, Fr. Arturo Sosa, SJ, Superior General of the Jesuits, after a profound and participatory process of spiritual discernment and with the approval of Pope Francis, communicated to the entire Ignatian family the four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) that will guide the mission of the Society of Jesus for a decade (2019-2029).

These four preferences are not isolated traits of our mission as the Society of Jesus, but rather must be articulated in all communities and apostolic works accompanied by Jesuits in their pursuit of collaborating with Christ's mission, to which we have felt called through the binomial of reconciliation and justice. Otherwise, we are called to embody these apostolic preferences in our own way of proceeding wherever we may be.

The formulation of these preferences reads as follows:

Explicación de las Preferencias Apostólicas Universales
“The Universal Apostolic Preferences are the fruit of a long process of common discernment that has involved the entire Society. They are an invitation to let ourselves be guided by the Spirit to find the way to best serve Christ's mission.”
Arturo Sosa, S.J.
