EPD, Father Pedro Antonio Suarez, SJ
On January 1, 2026, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, our Jesuit companion Fr. Pedro Antonio Suárez SJ has returned to the Father's House.
Pedro Antonio Suárez González was born on October 30, 1941, in Havana, Cuba. He graduated from Belén High School in 1958 and studied architecture at the Catholic University of Santo Tomás de Villanueva (1958-1961). His devotion to living the "magis" began when he entered the Society of Jesus at Pignatelli Institute in Los Teques, Venezuela, on April 9, 1961.
He continued his philosophy studies at Fordham University's Loyola Seminary (1964–1966) and taught during his regency at Loyola College in the Dominican Republic (1966–1967). Always eager to learn, he earned a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Miami (1969) and a master's degree in theology from Loyola University Chicago (1973).
P. Suárez, SJ was ordained a priest at Gesu Church in Miami on June 24, 1972. His dedication to education continued until he earned a doctorate in mathematics from Northwestern University (1977). He then worked in the Dominican Republic from 1977 until his return to Miami in 1987. After more than a decade of studies, P. Suárez took on the role of professor at Barry University (1987-2008) and headed its Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. He has also been a member of the Clavius Group of Mathematicians, founded by the Jesuits, since 1971. He was a professor at UASD Santo Domingo between the years 1977 and 1987. He made his final vows on February 2, 1978. Suárez served as the Superior for the Jesuits of Miami from 1991 to 1997 and again from 2010 to 2016. He also served as President of Belén Jesuit from 2009 to 2016; and President and Director of Regis House in Miami, as well as a spiritual advisor at Belén until 2022. In 2024, he began residing at the San José Infirmary of Manresa Loyola Santo Domingo.
He passed away on January 1st, 2026, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, at 3:24 am, due to paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (cardiac arrhythmia), as a consequence of septic shock associated with underlying pneumonia.
