A joyful celebration of faith and culture in Aishalton.
On a sunny and serene Sunday morning (September 14), the quiet village of Aishalton, in the far south of Rupununi, came alive as the community of St. Robert Bellarmine and its surroundings gathered to joyfully celebrate their patron saint's feast day. The day was a beautiful reflection of unity, faith, and rich cultural heritage.
The highlight of the celebration was the Holy Mass, which was held in both English and Wapichan, a powerful testament to the community's vibrant faith and deep respect for their Indigenous roots. From the graceful entrance dance performed by the parishioners to the moving hymns, scripture readings, and prayers of the faithful in Wapichan, the entire liturgy radiated an uplifting, spirit-filled atmosphere that touched those present.
In his homily, parish priest Fr. Joel Thompson, SJ, reminded the faithful of the meaning of the cross in a Christian’s life. He emphasized that the cross should be more than just a symbol; it should be the very example of our faith. «The Cross teaches us first to love God with all our heart and then to extend that love to our neighbors,» he noted. His message was both a challenge and an encouragement, calling the congregation to live their faith with courage and love in their daily lives. The homily concluded with a heartfelt reminder: «May the Cross be the symbol that guides us and inspires us to love more deeply.».
During the Mass, 11 new extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion were named. Once it concluded, the celebration continued with a lively cultural program and lunch.
The patronal festival of St. Robert Bellarmine in Aishalton was more than just an event: it was a vibrant expression of faith in action, a celebration of cultural heritage, and a reminder that, in the heart of Rupununi, God and community remain the center of life.
